Half-mast national flag for Nanggala submarine crew

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian Navy Headquarters instructed all Indonesian Navy soldiers to fly the Indonesian national flag at half mast. This is a tribute to the crew of the KRI Nanggala-402 who died while practicing missile fire in Bali waters.

The flag raising at half-mast as a sign of mourning was carried out for the next seven days. This was said by the Head of the Indonesian Navy Information Service (Kadispenal) First Admiral of the TNI Julius Widjojono in Jakarta, Monday (26/4).

The procession to honor 53 Hiu Kencana (golden sharks) soldiers will be held starting this Monday at 08.00 western Indonesian time (WIB). The instructions for raising the half-mast flag are contained in the Indonesian Navy Headquarters news form with registration number K-250421/4.3.

The letter was addressed to all the leaders of the main command (kotama), the Governor of the Naval Academy (AAL), the Commander of the Indonesian Navy Command and Staff School (Danseskoal), and the Indonesian Navy Aviation Center Command (Danspuspenerbal).

The German-made Nanggala military submarine lost contact while practicing missile fire in Bali waters. This submarine carries 53 people consisting of 49 crew, a unit commander, and three weapons personnel.

The ship lost contact when the training commander was about to give the torpedo firing authority. TNI Commander Marshal TNI Hadi Tjahjanto stated that the KRI Nanggala-402 which was lost in the waters north of Bali had drowned and was declared dead in its duties.

The announcement was made after the search team found a number of authentic evidence that showed the KRI Nanggala-402 sank at a depth of 838 meters and the hull was split into three parts.

Indonesia deeply mourned the death of the entire crew of the Nanggala submarine. They are considered as heroes of the nation and deserve the highest honors.
