REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SLEMAN -- The Faculty of Forestry, Gadjah Mada University (UGM), held an Open Senate Session of the 57th Anniversary. President Joko Widodo and Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto both attended the event virtually.

In his briefing, Jokowi said that people and forests both experience a process of evolution of roles and contributions. For traditional society, forests provide the basic needs of the surrounding community, such as food and medicines.

For agrarian society, forests become areas for expanding agricultural and livestock activities. For industrial communities, forests play a role as a source of raw materials, while for post-industrial communities forests act as a basis for community services.

In reality, Jokowi continued, agrarian and forest-based industrialization are still important economic sectors.  However, these concepts are often contradicted by post-industry concepts which tend to be conservative.

For that, he hopes, the UGM Faculty of Forestry can find common ground. Jokowi emphasized that this is a duty to learn and develop new concepts and one that should be taken into account by the use of digital precursor forestry technology.

Jokowi believes that the Faculty of Forestry UGM can develop innovations in this era of disruption.

"And, reading disruption to jump forward in Indonesian forestry. Once again, congratulations on the 57th Anniversary of the Faculty of Forestry, Gadjah Mada University. Keep contributing to the progress of Indonesia," said Jokowi, Friday (23/10).

Meanwhile, in his speech, Prabowo felt the theme "Forestry Sector Support for National Food Sovereignty" is very relevant because Indonesia's forests have a strategic role to play in providing land for food development.

He said forestry has a crucial role in national defense. Fulfilling food needs and realizing food security, food self-sufficiency, especially food sovereignty, must become a collective determination to make it happen.

"Therefore, I have high hopes for the Faculty of Forestry UGM to play an active role in optimizing the forestry sector in achieving one of the national strategic goals in the food sector," said Prabowo.
