REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia has expressed hope that the missing case of Saudi Arabian senior journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Turkey could be immediately uncovered. Khashoggi, who is a US citizen and senior columnist at Washington Post, was reported to have gone missing on Oct 2, 2018, after entering the Saudi Arabia consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

"Certainly, we are very concerned about the incident. Moreover, it happened in the location of a diplomatic mission or a consulate," Indonesian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Arrmanatha Nasir told newsmen here on Thursday.

Turkish authorities believed Khashoggi had been killed and his body had been removed.

"We really hope what has really happened to him could be known, the perpetrator revealed, and legal actions could be taken based on the existing laws in Turkey or Saudi Arabia," he remarked.

Saudi officials, however, had denied allegations of their involvement and insisted that Khashoggi had left the consulate building before he was reported missing.

Regarding the possibility for the case to be discussed at a bilateral meeting between Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi and her Saudi counterpart Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir in Jakarta on October 23, Nasir stated that the issue was not connected to bilateral relations between the two countries. However, he noted that bilateral issues would certainly be discussed during the meeting, besides regional and global issues.

"Let us just wait and see. It is not unlikely that Khashoggi case would be discussed, but we would discuss the development in the meeting later," he pointed out.
