Terror attacks in Surabaya might affect 2018 Asian Games: JK

Asian Games to be held simultaneously in Jakarta and Palembang on Aug 18 - Sept 2.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Vice President Jusuf Kalla (JK) said terror attacks in Surabaya, East Java might affect 2018 Asian Games. He assessed foreigners will generalize security in Indonesia.

He put Pakistan in South Asia as example. When terror hit, foreigners will be afraid to visit the country.

"In Indonesia, 2018 Asian Games will be held in Jakarta-Palembang, and terror attacks located in Surabaya, but sometimes many foreigners can't differ it," said JK on Tuesday (May 15).

JK asked authorities and people to work together to overcome terror ahead of 2018 Asian Games. The sport event will take place on August 18 to September 2.

A series of suicide bombings in Surabaya began on Sunday (May 13) morning at around 7.30 am at three churches, namely the Catholic Church of Immaculate Santa Maria (SMTB), the Indonesian Christian Church (GKI) on Diponegoro Surabaya street and Pantecost Church on Arjuno Surabaya street.

The attack continued with another suicide bombing by a family of five whose riding two-wheelers in front of enterance gate of Surabaya Police Headquarters on Monday (May 14) morning.

JK condemned all the terror attacks, including the riot at National Police Mobile Brigade Headquarters (Mako Brimob) in Kelapa Dua, Depok, West Java on last May 9. He said all these incidents could potentially damage the young generation of the nation.

"Of course we all want to be angry and condemn what happened in this week, the terror bombings in Surabaya and also that happened in Depok. We need security forces, police and Indonesian Military (TNI) to be ready, JK added.
