REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The sole candidate for the post of national police chief Commissioner General Budi Gunawan informed legislators here on Wednesday about his commitment to develop anti-corruption culture in the police institution.

"My first commitment is developing anti-corruption culture within the police institution," he informed the lawmakers from the commission overseeing law and human rights.

Despite his status as a suspect in a corruption case that the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) had announced on Tuesday, Budi Gunawan's fit and proper test for filling the national police chief post was conducted.

Gunawan further expressed his commitment to continue his predecessor's programs, defend the supremacy of law and legal certainty in law enforcement, and handle cases transparently and responsibly.

In serving the people, he promised to offer excellent services and build sound collaboration with other stakeholders in improving the competency and integrity of the police personnel, he emphasized.

A reward and punishment approach by improving the personnel's welfare would also be part of his commitments, he stressed.

Budi Gunawan was named a suspect in a corruption case for allegedly receiving bribes through a suspicious transaction on Tuesday.

"Commissioner General BG (Budi Gunawan) has been named suspect for allegedly receiving commitments when he headed the Police Headquarters' Career Planning Bureau in 2003-2006 and other posts in the police," KPK Chairman Abraham Samad stated.

According to Samad, Budi Gunawan allegedly violated Article 12 (A/B); Article 5 (2); and Article 11 or 12, (B), of Law No.31/1999 juncto Law No.20/2001 on corruption eradication juncto Article 55 (1) of Criminal Code.
