Russia offers to build nuclear power plant in Batam

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BATAM -- Russian energy company Rosatom has offered to build a nuclear power plant in Batam to cope with shortage in power supply in the industrial island.

A Russian delegation including from Rosatom visited Batam on Thursday and offered to invest in nuclear power plant, an expert staff of BP Batam Asroni Harahab said.

After the meeting with the Russian visitors, Asroni said Batam as a growing industrial area needs growing supply of power from year to year.

He said Rosatom is experienced in developing nuclear power plants and it has built such facility in a number of countries such as in Vietnam, Bangladesh and Turkey.

"We will have more talks on that matter. Hopefully , we will have further talks in November," he said.

He said the meeting with Rosatom leaders in Batam was also attended by officials of the foreign ministry , state power utility company PLN, and the National Atomic Energy Agency (Batan).

Rosatom will not only invest and build the facility but also provide training in technology to be used, he said.

The people also have to be convinced that there is cause for too much concern about danger of nuclear radioactive, he said.

Director of Business Development of Rosatom, Anna Kudryavtseva said the company offered to build two nuclear power plants each with a capacity of 1,200 MW.

Construction of the two facilities would cost around US$9 billion, Anna said.

Batam is an ideal place for nuclear power plants as it is safe from disaster especially earthquakes , Anna added.
