REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Presidium Chairman of Indonesia Police Watch (IPW), Neta S Pane, predicts the number of crime will rise in 2013, triggered by the increasing number of unemployment rate.
"Instead of doing their governmental task, political elites will more concentrate on general election 2014. They will too much focus on their political parties' interests," Pane said on Sunday.
Police's poor performance also contributes to the surge of crimes. He explained that the indicator of democracy were law certainty and professional law enforcement. He said that Indonesian Police had not met those criteria.
In 2012, about 29 police were killed and 69 were mobbed. While in 2011, the number of killed police were 20. "It means that police demonstrate poor quality in professionalism. If they cannot protect themselves, how can we expect them to protect us?" Pane said.
Pane blamed the short period of police training as the main cause of the poor quality performance. We coukd not expect professional police officers from only three months of training, he said.
